Nancy Nelson, who received her PhD in Education from the University of Texas at Austin, has also published as Nancy Nelson Spivey. She is Professor Emeritus at Louisiana State University (LSU) and also at the University of North Texas (UNT). At LSU, she was Elena and Albert LeBlanc Endowed Professor and Director of the LSU Writing Project. At UNT, she was Department Chair and Meadows Endowed Chair for Excellence in Education. She served on the faculty of the College of William and Mary, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, and also Carnegie Mellon University, where she was affiliated with the national Center for the Study of Writing and Literacy.
She is best known for her research in academic writing, especially source-based writing (which she termed discourse synthesis) as well as her work on constructivist theory and reading-writing connections. The latter include The Constructivist Metaphor: Reading, Writing, and the Making of Meaning (Academic Press and Brill Publications) and a co-edited volume, The Reading-Writing Connection (University of Chicago Press).
Her international activities on six continents have included numerous invited addresses, conference papers, seminars, and research collaborations. She has also sponsored guest lecturers and visiting scholars from other countries.
After retiring from full-time positions, she continues to write, to present conference papers, and to review articles for journals. She also coaches graduate students and early-career university faculty on their scholarly writing.
